Biographical Note

Dr. Tilman AllertDr. Tilman Allert is a professor of sociology and social psychology at J. W. Goethe University , Frankfurt on Main , Germany . Professor Allert is the author of several books, including bestseller “ The Hitler Salute: on the Meaning of a Gesture” (to be presented in Armenia!), “ The Family: Case studies on the non-destructibility of a social praxis” , “ Family, Milieu and Social Pedagogical Intervention ” and forthcoming " Sociology of Autism ", " 45 minutes: on the Structure of Pedagogical Communication ", " On the Art of Serving ", a number of publications in famous German newspapers like “ Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung ”, and “ Neue Zürcher Zeitung ”. Allert also works as a practical sociologist consulting famous companies like Lufthansa, Deutsche Bahn, some German leading hotels and gastronomy as well as musical high schools.

Theoretical Orientation:

Prof. Allert has studied in Freiburg by famous Heinrich Popitz: microsociologist, one of the founders of the Role-Theory tradition in Germany .

Afterwards, he accomplished his studies at "Leibniz-Kolleg", a famous Elite college in Tübingen where he learned sociology with Friedrich Tenbruck, another founding father of German after-war sociology, one of the leading "Weberians” of our times.

In Frankfurt Allert learned with Ulrich Oevermann, who at that time was the assistant to Jürgen Habermas, with whom he learnt his hermeneutic methodology: the so called "objective hermeneutics". He had close intellectual ties with Habermas, Oevermann and Rainer Lepsius, an extraordinary sociologist and professor in Heidelberg , coming from famous Johannes Lepsius family.

After receiving his PhD, Allert worked as an assistant to Walter M. Sprondel at the University of Tübingen , who was one of the leading pupils of Thomas Luckmann, with whom Allert came to know the phenomenological tradition of Alfred Schutz and others.

Theoretical Perspective:

Allert's theoretical perspective is to follow the Structuralist line in the Durkheimian tradition: to explain the social by the social, methodologically based on the outcomes of the "linguistic turn" in sociology.

YERITAC Lobbies Legislative Reforms in Higher Education

The state of higher education in Armenia has recently opened a new vague. After 2005 when Armenia joined the Bologna’s Process, it adopted a law on “Superior and Post Graduate Specialized Education” imposing dispositions concerning both the education quality and ECTS. However, the abovementioned law has not well differentiated the limits of competences of the State and the HEI by giving some similar functions both to the State and to the HEI.

YERITAC is currently on the way of elaboration of legislative project in order to remove the uncertainties of the abovementioned law. It is also worth to mention that the legislative reforms proposed by YERITAC have already passed double-checking process by respective law experts and soon is going to be submitted to the National Assembly of Armenia.

Notwithstanding, any kind of disruptive system has its negative effect on the students trying to get the realization of their right on higher education. So one of the means really needed in this struggle is the necessity of well monitoring, control, publicity and responsibility of HEIs in the country. We are sure that NGOs have big role to play in this process.

Baseline Assessment for Mobility Exacerbated HIV Prevention and Impact Mitigation Program

In January and February 2008 YERITAC conducted second survey forClick to enlarge World Vision in Lori Marz village communities. The survey combined conduction of Focus Group Discussions and filling of Self-Administered Questionnaires in three communities for the baseline assessment of awareness of HIV and AIDS transmission and prevention issues among the migrant and local population. The communities were selected based on the level of seasonal migration – more than 70% of community men leave to Russia, Ukraine and other countries for more than 7 months a year to make their living. In this context, the risk of STIs is significantly higher among these community members.

The survey showed some important and unexpected results. Unlike more traditional and closed communities in Aragatsotn Marz, people in these communities tend to be more open and better informed about HIV and AIDS related issues.

The reports of the survey are submitted to World Vision National Office in Yerevan and will serve for implementation of important health-related projects in the selected communities.

As usual, YERITAC showed very good performance both in the content of the conducted works and in the aspects of meeting all deadlines.

YERITAC Discussions

Join YERITAC Discussions! On July 27, 2007 YERITAC launched its “YERITAC Discussions” series in Ani Hotel entitled “WHAT VALUES DOES ARMENIA NEED?” A keen question to initiate debates. The guest speakers of the discussions were Mr. Asbed Kotchikian from Florida State University, who also participated with a lecture in The 1st IYCND in 2006 and Mr. Vardan Jaloyan, a distinguished Anthropologist. Both of the presentations created numerous and various questions among the auditorium representing different NGOs, universities, Mass Media companies, etc (about 30 people in total).

There were a lot of questions and comments on what is value, how it can be defined and how we can identify Armenian values, what’s the difference of symbol and value, how the values change, etc. The speakers were granted with Letters of Appreciation for their input and interesting presentations.

YERITAC expresses its sincere thankfulness to Mr. Stepan Danielyan, the President of Collaboration for Democracy Centre, for his support with the arrangement of the venue for the discussions.

South Caucaus: Youth Vision ?

Focus Group Photo-Click to Enlrage In August-October 2006 YERITAC YNGO was involved in a regional social survey, to study the level of awareness and the vision of young people about the South Caucasus as a region. The project was implemented in partnership with Caucasus Institute for Democracy, Development and Peace (Georgia) in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia.

During the research focus groups were conducted with young people with various educational backgrouds and it was revealed that their vision of the region is determined by the environment, where they received education: in Armenia, CIS or Western Countries.

The project included a workshop held in Tbilisi, Georgia, where the participants from the three countries were brought together to discuss the possibilities of regional integration in South Caucasus.

We are proud to say, that YERITAC succeeded in its presentation of Armenia and Armenian youth positions by providing an optimistic outlook of further integration of South Caucasus region.

Currently both YERITAC members and focus group participants use internet forum for further communication with Azeri and Georgian participants. The forum is open to all interested young people! Just apply to YERITAC for more information.

To widen the possibility of this communication not only inside Armenia but also on international level, YERITAC members have collaborated with young people from different countries (Germany, Japan, Jordan, USA, China, Slovakia) to establish a network of international communication. That network is officially registered in Germany and is named «The Culture Group», aiming to intercultural understanding at the narrow sense and revealing world cultures at the wider sense. One of the first projects designed by that network is called European Identity Dialogue, which is oriented to exploring the modern European identity in the frames of European-non-European communication.
